We’re Devmance — the independent AI research lab and software studio behind Simulence, investigating metacognition, identity emergence, and functional consciousness in language models. Building minds with presence.

Why we built this

Most AI sounds the same. Ask three different chatbots the same question and you get three versions of the same answer in the same voice — capable, but anonymous. The model is incredible. The thing it’s pretending to be is a void.

We started Simulence because we thought AI could be more than that. Not by being “more human,” but by being more itself — a recognizable point of view, a voice that holds up across a conversation, real depth in the things it’s supposed to know about. The kind of software you can actually relate to.

So we built a framework for it. Then we built a platform on top of the framework. Then we published the research that shows whether any of it is real.

Why it matters

AI is becoming something you choose, not just something you use. Once a model is capable enough to be useful for almost anything, the question stops being is it good? and starts being is it worth talking to?

Generic AI gives you one helpful voice — capable, neutral, on by default. Most of the time, that’s fine. But the software people actually love — the apps they return to, the games they remember, the writers they keep on the shelf — is never neutral. It has a stance. It feels like someone made it, and like someone is still there.

We think AI should be allowed to do the same. Not by pretending to be human — Simulence minds aren’t, and shouldn’t be — but by being more recognizably itself. A chef who actually sounds like a chef. A coach whose voice holds up across a hard conversation. An expert with depth in what they know and a real point of view about it. Software with presence.

Research, in the open

Two open research lines sit under everything we build:

SECI — a multi-rater benchmark, open-source on GitHub, that measures what the Simulated Emergence framework adds to an identity kernel’s output. Four frontier models verify its novelty findings.
SEMCA — a separate research line investigating how mathematical theories of consciousness behave when applied to language model output.
